Amber Jewellery Care Guide
Caring for Your Amber Jewellery
Amber is a remarkable natural gem, formed from fossilised tree resin over millions of years. Because it is an organic material, a semi-precious gem, it will benefit from gentle handling. With proper care, your amber jewellery can retain its lustre and integrity for many years. The simple care advice below will help keep your amber looking and working its best. Read on for our expert tips and care recommendations.
Care of Amber
- Remove for bathing – whilst one dip will not damage the amber, repeated exposure may impact the gem. Shower gels, shampoos and shaving foams and creams can all build up on amber and make it dull over time.
- Avoid chemicals – perfumes, cosmetics, hair products, lotions and particularly sun protection creams can damage your amber. Put your amber jewellery on only after use of these materials and when dried on the skin. Rule of thumb is last on, first off. Preferably keep sprays away from the area where your amber will rest. Maybe leave your amber at home on outdoor sunny days.
- Do not soak your amber - amber leftDin water is asking for trouble.
- Protect from heat – Amber is a natural resin and should be kept away from excessive heat and prolonged direct sunlight. So not leave on a window sill or radiator.
- Prevent scratches – Amber is softer than many gemstones. Store pieces separately from other jewellery and hard objects. A soft pouch or lined storage box is a good idea.
- Clean gently – Firstly, wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid jewellery cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, and abrasive polishing products. If you feel it needs more, use a very gentle mild soap in lukewarm water if necessary, ensuring you rinse off well.
- Polish by hand – To keep your amber glowing brightly, you can gently polish with a clean soft cloth. The rubbing action is the best polisher. A VERY tiny drop of olive oil (dropped on a cloth, not directly on the amber) can be used to enhance and bring up the lustre. If it is not coming up well, it may need to be restored professionally. If the beads have been in use for a long time, and have become compromised and coated, having a whitish hue, your amber may need to be replaced.
Care by Jewellery Type
Amber Bead Necklaces and Bracelets with Screw Clasps
Many amber bead necklaces and bracelets are individually threaded on cotton or silk and finished with a screw clasp. The threading and clasps need particular care.
- Do not use excessive force with the clasps or threading – gentle hands are required.
- Always unscrew the clasp before removing.
- Do not overtighten the screw clasp – the forse can crack the screw bead or strain the insert. This is the numer one reason for breakage.
- Never pull the necklace or bracelet apart.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to water.
Amber Bracelets on Elastic Threading
Elastic bracelets are comfortable and easy to wear and can get a lot of use. They will benefit from gentle handling.
- Roll the bracelet over your hand rather than stretching it.
- Avoid excessive pulling, rolling or playing on the elastic.
- Avoid getting it caught on buttons or household items – the hover and dish washing brushes are dangers in my house!
- Remove during strenuous sport or activities like gardening – gardening gloves are deadly for snatching your amber bracelet!
- Lint and debris can get trapped between the beads. Clean regularly by gently separating the beads and rubbing with a soft cloth
- Store flat, out of sunlight, when not in use.
Amber Amulets and Bracelets with Sliding Knots
Sliding-knot jewellery is adjustable and durable when handled correctly.
- Adjust gently using both cords, using both hands to slide the knots on the cord.
